Fuel the Fight Fundraiser a Huge Success

Convenience store customers respond in a huge way to support local people with cancer

When local fuel and convenience store company McIntosh Energy wanted to support a different nonprofit through their community fundraising, Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana came up during brainstorming. Tammi McCann, the Retail Operations Manager, immediately remembered her experience with Cancer Services over a decade ago when she was facing cancer.

“I will never forget the kindness and support I received,” she said.

“Tammi immediately jumped in to advocate for Cancer Services,” Jessica Carroll, the Public Relations and Marketing Manager, recalled. “And for us, it was a no brainer. Here was an organization who had a direct impact on our team members.”

To raise funds to help local people with cancer during the last two years, McIntosh Energy has sold pink ribbon magnets in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “I was concerned if anyone would see the value in getting a magnet,” Jessica shared. They’d never done a fundraiser like this before and didn’t know how their customers would respond.

In October, McIntosh Energy sells breast cancer awareness magnets at their local MacFood Mart convenience stores.

But respond their customers did. The first year of their fundraiser, the magnets were sold out in two days at one of their four convenience stores around Fort Wayne. “People would buy a ribbon and then hand it back to the cashier for another person to be able to buy. It was a huge success,” Tammi said. “I’ve never been so happy to scramble to find more of something,” Jessica said with a laugh.

At a special event at their Goshen Road location, McIntosh Energy presented a check totaling $1,200 to Cancer Services in 2023 and $1,920 in 2024. Those funds immediately began to help local people with cancer receive compassionate support and assistance.
